Former SAS Bomb Disposal Expert & Professional Footballer
Born in Bolton in the 1960s, Phil Stant was an avid football fan as he grew up. A passionate Bolton Wanderers fan, he was eager to become a top flight player, just like his idols.
However, in the early 1980’s Phil’s football dream took second place, as he joined the army. Phil soon saw action in the Falklands War including the Argentinean air attack on Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram at Fitzroy. He soon progressed through the ranks, and was attached to the SAS as a Bomb Disposal expert.
Although Phil’s life became filled with combat and military exercises, he never gave up his love for football, and after being spotted playing for the Army Football Team, Phil lived his childhood dream and became a professional footballer playing for Notts County, Reading, Fulham, Brighton and Lincoln City.
Popular with the fans and team alike, he became the manager at Lincoln in 2000.
As a motivational speaker, Phil Stant gives a frank account of a life lived to the full. Phil recalls his tales from the front line, his Bomb Disposal experiences, onto the pitch and from the sidelines.
With fun anecdotes, such as the time that the only way he could make it to a match was by SAS helicopter, to how he felt about being sensationally sacked from his managerial role at Lincoln, Phil’s speech is an insight to motivation, teamwork and leadership.
As a regular broadcaster, in 2007 Phil returned to the Falklands to film the documentary ‘A Soldiers Story’ based on Stant’s own book ‘Ooh Aah Stantona’.
‘A Soldier’s Story’ was broadcast on ITV Central and ITV 2 as part of the 25th Anniversary of the war. The documentary offered both humour (Stant originally imagined the islands to be off the coast of Scotland) and haunting sadness (Stant’s recollections of the day 48 of his colleagues were killed.
Phil now works for The Football League as a regional officer. His experiences have enabled him to establish a reputation as a very good motivational speaker and his warm, conversational style and wit has something for everyone.
Phil Stant – client comment
Phil was booked a speaker at our annual R.F.U Referees conference at the Wyboston Lakes Conference late in June 2008. The feedback that he received from the delegates ranged between “good and excellent”.
Phil was able to tailor the motivational talk to relate to qualities and attitudes needed in our “field of work”.
Comments from delegates and included:
“Really creative and informative”
“Inspirational and entertaining”
“Thought provoking and presented in a amusing manner”
“Super session, enjoyed it”
Phil was able to relate his football and military experiences to skills that would be needed in an everyday, working life environment.
The delegates enjoyed his presentation.
Many thanks,
Steve Savage
